What is Infrared Thermal Imaging

A Miracle Time Saving Tool

Infrared Thermal Imaging, also known as IRT, is a miracle time saving adjunctive screening tool. Unlike other imaging options, IRT looks at the ENTIRE body of a horse and identifies areas of dysfunction, accurately pinpointing musculoskeletal inflammation, injury and exact location. One quick full-body scan speeds up the diagnostic process, starts treatment earlier and resolves the problem sooner and more effectively.

IRT works by using a medically approved Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera which scans the entire body of a horse while quickly identifying health problems simply by seeing the invisible. This technology's high-resolution imaging measures the thermal temperature variations and changes emitted from a horse’s body and documents the entire physiology. With pinpoint accuracy, injury and inflammation are easily detected due to the heat they emit, making it easy to see pain points in any horse.

Infrared Thermal Imaging (IRT) is a non-invasive, no touch, no radiation screening. Imaging is extremely affordable, quick and convenient for you and your horse. Horses are imaged right in the clients' barn without sedation, simply by standing while we do a scan with a special FDA cleared Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera. This imaging technology minimizes stress on the horse and enables a more efficient diagnosis, leading to a cost saving, fast resolution, and there are no harmful side-effects to be concerned about.

Thermal Imaging (IRT) is a unique imaging tool as it accurately identifies and maps the thermal patterns that radiate from a horse, making problems areas visible to us so that a treatment plan can begin and a faster resolution can occur. A full body scan can be completed in 30 minutes or less (with cooperation from the horse), allowing us to see current health issues along with early warning signs of brewing problems. IRT can detect stresses on a horse's body up to 3 weeks before visible signs appear. Not only is IRT a great tool for injury detection, but a wonderful monitoring tool for the equine athlete to keep them injury free.

IRT is being used not only in equine health, but on humans as well due to its excellent capability in pinpointing musculoskeletal issues, its accuracy, and its affordability. IRT is currently being used worldwide in the medical community, for breast cancer detection, in hospitals, veterinary practices and more. Though still somewhat of a secret here in the USA, the FDA has approved IRT for medical and veterinary use as an accurate adjunctve imaging tool. Use as the first line of injury detection; monitor treatment and the healing process; or use regularly to monitor and manage the well-being of a horse in training.

As with any adjunctive imaging screening (such as ultrasound, radiography etc.), thermography is not a stand-alone screening tool and does not replace any other diagnostic device. Additional diagnostic screenings may be necessary and prescribed by your veterinarian for complete diagnosis.
